'Remember The Trees: Southern California’s Changing Ecology'

Ruth Wallen presents "Remember the Trees: Southern California’s Changing Ecology."

Opening Reception: Thursday, March 15, 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. in Art Gallery D101. Artist walk through in the gallery will be at 6:00 p.m. on the night of reception.

Since 2010, over 100 million trees have died in California alone--ravaged by beetles, drought, fires and more.

This exhibition visually chronicles the ecological changes in a few locations in southern California: from Torrey Pines State Park and other locations in San Diego County, to Joshua Tree, Walker Pass, and others further north. Coastal chaparral pines, oaks, and more are represented in sumptuous large-scale photomontages that express the dynamic qualities of these environments.

Text explains the intertwined impacts of urbanization, globalization, invasive species, and climate change that are causing the trees’ decline.

Ruth Wallen is an ecological and community based artist. Initially trained in environmental science she works on a variety of media, on many scales, from intimate artist books and performative lectures to large installations, interactive projects, web sites and public art.

Her work is based on extensive research and paying close attention to the local environment.

Elements of this exhibition were created in collaboration with scientists at Scripps Institute for Oceanography.

The gallery will be closed for the college's Spring Break from Monday, March 26 - Friday, March 30.

Dates and times of events are subject to change without notice. Always check the event organizer's website for the most updated schedule before attending.
