La Jolla Playhouse stages "Wild Goose Dream," a world-premiere play with music.

This co-production with the Public Theater is written by Hansol Jung and directed by Leigh Silverman.

It follows the story of South Korean "goose father" Minsung who works long hours and lives in a sparse room to support his wife and daughter overseas. When his loneliness drives him online he becomes captivated by Nanhee, a North Korean defector desperately trying to find the father she left behind. As they navigate their new relationship, the chaotic chatter of the internet, self-doubt and a pesky apparition complicate their ability to truly connect.

"Wild Goose Dreams" is a lyrical and humorous play filled with original music and an a cappella chorus, it is a moving exploration of how we find and lose each other in the modern world.

The show runs Sept. 5 through Oct. 1, 2017. For additional details call (858) 581-1010.

(Super) Short Review:

People are pretty mixed about how they like this new one-act play, but I'm a sucker for creative storytelling, so I'm firmly on #TeamWildGooseDreams. It's about a South Korean man and a North Korean defector who are isolated from their families and find connection in each other. What makes the show quirky is a collection of characters who represent voices from the internet. It also boasts a cast of TV favorites (Yunjin Kim from "Lost" and James Kyson from "Hawaii Five-O") and a set with a clever water element. "Wild Goose Dreams" is a heavy show, so it's a lot to digest in one act, but it's definitely worth your attention.
