Classic words of wisdom are used daily to inspire hope, reason and contemplation. This exhibition, “Works of Wisdom” at Thumbprint Gallery beginning January 14th, presents works by an eclectic mix of artists using famous quotes as their stimulus.
Not to be missed is the work of Mike Maxwell. This San Diego born artist has exhibited all over the world and recently exhibited at the pioneering art platform Art Basel in Miami. Stone blue faces devoid of skin tone are Maxwell’s signature figure that enables him to explore themes of race, sex and religion with an abstract style. His use of colour is thoughtful and poignant, while emphasizing his message. He frequently uses black and white with a strong, cold blue typically on his subject’s skin but also in scenes of isolated windmills and buildings.
Also exhibiting is Kelly Vivanco who typically presents works with female characters that constantly feature in her work. Her art has a folk tale, storybook vibe that stems from her love of all things vintage, children’s literature, old photographs and artists such as Hans Holbein and the Pre-Raphaelites. Vivanco has a BFA in fine arts from Laguna College of Art and Design and has a studio in Escondido. She also has a web comic “Patches” which is separate from her gallery works.
New York artist Cayetano Valenzuela paintings are “an exploration and documentation of his memory personal relationships and the underbelly of the American cultural landscape.” His website’s title, “Sleep, Electricity and Art,” reflects his ironic, strong style where he often blends stories into a collage, mimicking the seemingly illogical dream process.
Other artists exhibiting include Katherine Brannock, Franky Agostino, Isaias Crow, Eric Wixon, MR. DVICE, Jimmy Ovadia, Carly Ealey, Gloria Muriel, Michael Mahaffey, Cayetano Valenzuela, Jordan Josafat, Aaron C. Moore, Brian Dombrowsky, Alli Bautista, Christopher Konecki, Matthew Land, Sophinie Som, Brian Hebets.
The exhibition opening starts at 5pm and runs until 10pm on January 14, however, the show will run until February 4, 2012.
