"YOU: Investigating Identity"
September 15 – November 11, 2012
Reception with the Artists, September 15, 2 p.m.
Bringing together a bold array of artworks by seven contemporary San Diego and New York based artists, this exhibition examines the quest for and exploration of the ‘self.’
Viewers will explore the multitude of social confines that contribute to the development of personality and character through a diverse range of artwork including: drawing, sculpture, performance, mixed media installation, and video. These works probe the human state and inspire viewers to reflect on their own evolving identities.
Exhibition artists include: David Adey, Cathy Begien, Alida Cervantes, Lea Dennis, Kelly Schnorr, Trish Stone and Vicky Wright.
Meet artists in the exhibition and hear from the curator Tara Smith during the opening reception on Saturday, September 15 at 2:00 p.m. The reception is free with museum admission and complimentary for OMA members, students and military.
OMA invites you to become part of this exhibition by participating in several interactive components that allow viewers to dialogue on the subject of identity. Contribute an image to the YOU Photo digital screen which plays a loop of the eyes of previous exhibition viewers. Email a photograph of your face to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Post Office Project enables guests to read letters collected from hundreds of participants around the country discussing an event or individual that helped form the people they are today. Readers then may contribute their own autobiographical musings to the exhibition wall, adding a piece of their unique identity to the project.

In her featured video piece, Alida Cervantes toys with gender expectations by acting out male and female characters in her colorful mock music video. Cathy Begein wittily pokes at the dark underbelly of America’s social drinking scene. Meanwhile, Kelly Schnorr and Lea Dennis examine who one is in relationship to family history and heirlooms through large-scale multimedia installations.
By presenting these diverse artworks together as never seen before, "YOU: Investigating Identity," allows viewers to address their own individuality and the ways in which they view themselves within contemporary culture. "YOU: Investigating Identity" exhibit runs September 15 – November 11, 2012.
This exhibition is made possible by the generous contribution of Pendleton Eye Center.
