Gays and Lesbians for Public Broadcasting is a group of people who believe that KPBS plays a vital role in our community through its superior radio and television programming. They seek to sustain and expand this role by providing personal financial support to KPBS and by garnering the support of others in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community.
Why Support KPBS Gays and Lesbians for Public Broadcasting?
-
Each year KPBS TV/FM airs hundreds of programs that represent the GLBT community fairly and accurately. Some of these programs are exclusively on GLBT topics, but more often members of the GLBT community are included in programs on broader topics, thereby enlightening a wider listener/viewer base.
-
KPBS programming is seen and heard by San Diegans from all walks of life, contributing to better understanding of the GLBT community, our issues and people.
-
The people who listen to or watch public broadcasting programs are those most likely to effect societal changes. According to National Public Radio and Public Broadcasting Service data:
-
NPR listeners are more than twice as likely to write a letter to an editor, to write to an elected official, or to have had something published, and to have visited an elected official, addressed a public meeting, or are active in local civic issues.
-
PBS viewers are 96% more likely than the average US adult to take an active part in civic issues and are loyal in their support of organizations that they trust.
-
GLPB was the first of its kind in the nation for public broadcasting – an effort to outreach to a specific demographic group and develop a mutually beneficial relationship.
-
Promotional messages for GLPB air on both KPBS radio and television, demonstrating to the public at large that KPBS recognizes the GLBT community as vital supporters and avid listeners/viewers of public broadcasting.

No where else on radio or television will you find programming about the GLBT community that is as comprehensive, unbiased, and informative.
