Wills & Bequests
Many people choose to provide for KBPS in their wills or living trusts. These gifts are the simplest and most common planned gifts, and can be made in the following ways:
-
A percentage of your total estate. This is a variable amount that will change as the size of your estate changes.
-
The residue or a percentage of the residue of your estate. After your loved ones have been taken care of, you may choose to designate some or all of the remainder of your estate to KPBS and/or other individuals or organizations of your choice.
-
A gift of a specific amount. You may leave a specific dollar amount to KPBS by simply naming the amount that you would like to give.
When naming any charity in your will or living trust, always use the organization's full legal name and federal taxpayer identification number.
Our full, legal name is: "San Diego State University Research Foundation for the benefit of KPBS." Our taxpayer I.D. number is: 95-6042721.
Sample language for naming KPBS in your will or living trust:
"I give [________$ or %] to San Diego State University Research Foundation, a California nonprofit corporation, for the benefit of KPBS. San Diego State University Research Foundation's tax I.D. number is 95-6042721"
Your gift may go to support KPBS operations, or can be earmarked for a specific program or project. For instance, you can restrict your gift to the following areas:
-
News and information
-
Arts and culture
-
Science, environment and nature
-
Children's programs
-
Radio Reading Service
Using funds from a retirement account to make bequests is often a good strategy. If there is a balance in your retirement account at your death, not only is there a potential income tax burden, but there may be estate taxes as well. Taxes could eat up as much as 70-75% of retirement assets under certain circumstances.
A will may be used along with, or to create, many of the plans of giving as describe in these pages. Living trusts may also be used in this manner.
