Boycott organizers plan large march & rally

Organizers of a May 1 boycott of businesses and schools in San Diego County announced their plans today. Their march and rally are part of a larger nationwide protest in support of providing a path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.

A broad coalition of immigrants' rights groups is calling for students to skip school and employees to skip work to attend a noon rally at San Ysidro's Larson Park. The coalition is urging people not to buy anything on Monday and is asking businesses to close.

Organizer Elva Salinas says the idea is to show how vital immigrants are to the United States economy.

Salinas: "Our government has continuously said that immigrants are sucking this nation dry, as far as economically. If in fact it's true, that particular day, the economy should boom."

Meanwhile, the Catholic Church and many schools and unions are urging people to work, go to school, and then attend an evening rally in Balboa Park. They say a boycott could backfire and work against efforts to get citizenship for illegal immigrants. Amy Isackson, KPBS News.
