Senate approves Million Solar Roofs bill

California solar energy advocates are hailing the state senate's approval of the Million Solar Roofs bill. The governor has a month to decide whether to sign the bill into law. KPBS Reporter Erik Anderson has details.

The solar roof legislation began its legislative journey two years ago. The measure requires new home builders to offer solar as an option by 2011. It requires utilities like San Diego Gas and Electric to buyback extra electricity from more solar powered homes. And, the bill allows municipal utilities, to offer solar rebates. Solar Advocate Bernadette Del Chiaro says the focus now turns to the state's residents.

Del Chiaro: We've got around 20,000 solar roofs in California. And, you know, the challenge is ahead of us and we all now have to step up to the plate and start buying solar.

The bill is designed to compliment a solar power rebate program set up by the California Public Utilities Commission earlier this year. Erik Anderson KPBS News.
