Planned Parenthood unsatisfied with emergency constraceptive plan
Thursday, August 24, 2006
California already allows women to buy Plan B without a prescription at select pharmacies. The federal government's decision will expand availability to more drug stores.
But the government is restricting over-the-counter access to women 18 and older. Vince Hall is with the San Diego County chapter of Planned Parenthood.
Hall: This is a scientifically baseless decision being imposed on teenagers, and the United States has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy in the western world. Anything that makes it harder for teenagers to avoid unintended pregnancy, is bad medicine and bad public policy.
In 2003, the Food and Drug Administration's own scientific advisers recommended over-the-counter sales for all ages.
