Audio

Aired 4/19/09

Tom Fudge : The word cartoon is hard to define because it encompasses so much. It’s a form that incorporates art, humor, politics and parody. And its best practitioners are legendary figures in America. They go by names like Charles Schulz, Jules Pfeiffer, Walter Kelly and Pat Oliphant. Those cartoon artists and many more and featured in an illustrated history of American cartooning by Harry Katz.

The book is called Cartoon America: Comic Art in the Library of Congress . Harry is the editor of the book. He also happens to be head curator in the prints and photography division of the Library of Congress.
