Tuesday, December 26, 2006
The California Highway Patrol says roughly thirty percent fewer people died on California roadways over the Christmas holiday weekend than last year.
According to the latest CHP statistics, 28 people died from accidents over the weekend. That’s compared to 39 last year. CHP spokeswoman Jamie Coffee says some of this year’s fatalities might not have happened.if more people had been buckled up
Coffee: Fifteen vehicle occupants killed within CHP jurisdiction. Of those 15, 13 of them were not wearing their seat belts.
Coffee credits the CHP’s maximum enforcement period over the weekend. That means up to 80 percent of all available officers are out on the road. She says they’ll be doing the same thing for the New Year’s holiday weekend.
