Mayors ballot measure proposal takes step forward

San Diego mayor Jerry Sanders' proposed ballot measures took a step forward today. A San Diego city council committee agreed to send the proposal to allow privatizing some city services to the full city council. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

Once again San Diego City Hall was packed with supporters and opponents of the controversial proposal to allow outsourcing of city services. Labor leaders opposed privatization, saying there's no guarantee it would save the city money.

Many city business leaders urged the council to allow voters to decide the issue in November. Nancy Graham, President former mayor of West Palm Beach says simply forcing city workers there to compete with the private sector produced gains.

Graham: "In our experience in almost every case after we did this our employees won the bids, we helped them we didn't cut raising money we didn't cut professional training money, we gave them the resources on how to compete."

The San Diego Chamber of Commerce and the Taxpayers Association said many questions need to be answered before they can support or oppose the ballot measure . Alison St John, KPBS News.
