Young movie watchers judge portrayals of smoking

Young movie watchers have given out the 11th annual Hackademy awards, for the best and worst portrayals of smoking on film. Voters are under 21 years old, and base their decisions on weekly screenings of the nation's top ten movies. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.

This year's Thumbs Down award goes to the movie Sin City, for its portrayal of smoking as stylish and glamorous.

Kori Titus coordinates the Hackademy awards for the non-profit group Breathe California. She says this year's Thumbs Up award goes to Constantine, for its accurate depiction of tobacco use.

Titus: The lead character is dying of cancer because of his addiction. He has a bloody cough that he's constantly taking cough medicine for to try and quell it.

Titus says the percentage of P-G rated movies that include smoking continues to increase. She says half of all such films contained smoking scenes last year...compared to 41 percent in 2004.
