UCSD launches new Science Research Park

A local biomedical research company is expanding onto the UC San Diego campus today. It's the first of five buildings in the university's new Science Research Park. Mitch Kronenberg, president of the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology, says the company will explore possible cures for diabetes and cancer.

Kronenberg: "It's gonna enhance science research in the area of immunology, which can have a real impact on human health. That's Point Number One. Point Number Two is there are gonna be extra jobs, and these are considered good-quality jobs ---- maybe on the order of 100 additional jobs here in the next three to four years."

The company is also researching a number of infectious diseases that the U.S. government considers bioterrorist threats, such as SARS and small pox.
