Fire season underway, crews ready to respond

Southern California's fire season is official underway and state fire fighting officials say they're prepared. California Department of Forestry spokesman Michael Jarvis says fire crews have been fully staffed since last month.

He says air tankers, helicopters, fire-engine and hand crews are ready to respond to wildfires. Jarvis says the threat of fire in Southern California is always serious.

Jarvis: We didn't have than many big fires so there's a lot of older vegetation, then this year you had so much moisture in areas, that you've still got really high grasses. So as far as we're concerned there's always a big threat for fire.

San Diego CDF officials say late spring rains could help keep small fires from raging out of control in the early part of the summer.
