Schwarzenegger requests probe into gas price spike

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says he wants to speed up a probe into high gasoline prices that hurt consumers this spring. The governor called on the California Energy Commission to look into the situation in late April because prices in the state were climbing dramatically.

Schwarzenegger says early results from the probe show the price spike happened only in California.

Schwarzenegger: There is no clear evidence as to what caused this spike. With no other regions experiencing a similar increase, but for some reason our prices rose faster and higher than the rest of the nation.

Schwarzenegger says the state will punish anyone responsible for market manipulation or unfair business practices that took advantage of consumers. He's asking the state energy commission to complete its investigation by mid August instead of waiting until the end of September.
