SPECIAL COVERAGE: Living With Wildfires: San Diego Firestorm 10 Years Later

New pharmacy school opens at UCSD

A new pharmacy school officially opened its doors Tuesday on the campus of UC San Diego. Classes have been underway for several years, but until now students and teachers didn't have a facility to call their own. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

UCSD officials say the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences will produce a new generation of specialized pharmacists. Doctor Palmer Taylor is dean of the School. He says pharmacists today no longer just dispense drugs. They also work to discover new drugs, and that's why pharmacy students need to work closely with medical students.

Taylor: "We have the most integrative academic program with the school of medicine - where medical and pharmacy students get together and work in various healthcare settings, such that the pharmacists in many ways becomes the therapeutic consultant in these efforts."

The $45 million high-tech facility features cutting-edge laboratories, research centers and plenty of classroom space. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
