Local elementary school receives new guitars

Students at a local elementary school will receive brand new guitars today thanks to a popular guitar manufacturer and a local group the promotes music in schools. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

Students at Flying Hills Elementary in El Cajon will be handed 20 finely-tuned Taylor Guitars from the popular manufacturer. Every year the local company donates guitars to local schools so they can establish or grow their music programs. Flying Hills will expand its program by adding guitar instruction. Local musician Tom Boyer is a big supporter of the project. He says students treasure their new instruments.

Boyer: Its like oh my goodness, this is fantastic, this is new, this is exciting. You know children are like sponges its just so great to see that their smiles and the enthusiasm they exude.

The San Diego Music Awards Foundation raises money every year to help pay for the guitars. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
