San Diego Gas and Electric has added another 120 megawatts to the company’s renewable energy portfolio. One megawatt is enough electricity to power about 650 homes in the region. The utility is trying to push its share of renewable power sources to a state mandated 20 percent threshold by 2010. Company spokesman Ed Van Herik says it was only a few years ago that less than one percent of the company’s power came from renewable sources.
Van Herik: These deals bring us to approximately 16 percent, under contract, to be delivered by 2010. We are right now in contract negotiations with several other venders to supply additional power.
Van Herik says the utility hopes to eclipse the state requirement of 20 percent from renewable power. Solar, wind and water power are the most common renewable sources. Others include geothermal energy and the burning of bio masses.
