San Diego police officers are preparing to clear out McGonigle Canyon tomorrow. That includes removing migrants who live in the canyon – as well as the San Diego Minutemen, who plan a protest there. KPBS Radio’s Andrew Phelps reports.

Conservative talk-show host Rick Roberts says undocumented workers should not be allowed to live in McGonigle Canyon, so Roberts is asking his supporters to camp out in protest.

Rick Roberts : What I can do is stage something like we’re doing tomorrow to get the attention of the city officials.

Police Captain Boyd Long says the city is listening. Long is in touch with the canyon’s property owners.

Boyd Long: And they’ve assured me that they do not want anyone on their property. They don’t want migrants on their property. And they don’t want anyone who’s planning on camping on their property.

Long says police officers will go deep into the canyon to root out migrant camps. He says it’s up to property owners to destroy any housing. Long also says protestors will be charged with trespassing. Last July, the city decided to shut down migrant camps in McGonigle Canyon. Critics say the police haven’t done their job. For KPBS, I’m Andrew Phelps.
