SPECIAL COVERAGE: Living With Wildfires: San Diego Firestorm 10 Years Later

Crime Continues to Plague Beach Communities

Audio

Tom Fudge : Late last week, San Diego police arrested four men in connection with a burglary and sexual assault in Mission Beach. The suspects are accused of breaking into a Mission Beach apartment, holding residents at gunpoint and raping two women. Both women are students at the University of San Diego.

The incident shocked the community. The fallout has resulted in calls for better lighting and police protection. An off-duty officer circulated a flier at a community meeting about the assaults. The flier argued the incident shows the police department is understaffed. One of the persons arrested for the crime is 17 years old, but the police chief and district attorney say they’ll ask to have him tried as an adult.

Guest
  • Kevin Faulconer , councilman for San Diego District 2 which includes the beach neighborhoods and downtown.
