Palomar College Director May Have Upped Grades Without Authority

Palomar College officials appointed a campus investigator to look into whether a veteran administrator illegally changed the grades of a group of students.  KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

A former Palomar College dean will conduct the investigation. He'll determine whether the college's student activities director, Bruce Bishop, improved the grades of five students in a foreign language class without the permission of their professor.

That professor, whose name is being withheld, came forward to say she never signed off on the grade change, even when Bishop sent her harassing emails to do so. College president Bob Deegan didn't elaborate on what may happen to Bishop if he's at fault.

Deegan : I'd hate to speculate if indeed this was complete fraud, an illegal act, but certainly we will remedy any problem and report the appropriate grade.

Bishop says students came to him last summer, complaining about their final grade in the class. He says the professor approved the grade change but later had a change of heart. The investigation is expected to wrap up at the end of this month.
