After School Programs to Receive Extra $5 Million This Year

San Diego's before and after school programs will get an extra $5 million in state funding this year. District officials say more than one hundred campuses will benefit from the hefty increase.  KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

San Diego's extended school day program, called Six to Six, gives students a few hours of physical activity or instruction outside of the regular school day. Last year the state gave the San Diego Unified School District five dollars for every student who took part in a Six to Six program every day. Now the district gets $7.50 for every student, every day.

District spokeswoman Christiana McPhee says look for before and after school programs to be more robust.

McPhee : These funds are used to staff the programs, but as well as to identify curriculum, provide supplies. So this is really giving us an opportunity to enhance the quality of the programs.

This is the first substantial increase in after school funding since 1999. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
