Governor Woos Returning Vets Use GI Benefits at California Schools

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is starring in a new public service announcement that state officials will release later this month to radio and TV stations, and even YouTube. He wants to persuade military personnel to come to college in California. From Sacramento, Ellen Ciurczak reports.

The new announcement features the governor promoting the state's Troops to College initiative:

Schwarzenegger : I want all active duty and military personnel and veterans to know that I want you on our campuses.

It's the state's attempt to ensure the 96 percent of vets who sign up for education benefits when they join the military use them to go to a California school when they get out.

Jeff Weston is on the state's Troops to College team. He says the governor's appearance in the announcement is of the utmost importance:

Weston : The whole Troops to College initiative is to bring awareness throughout the state and that's one thing that I think's been lacking in the past -- a lot of veterans don’t know what's available to them.

Figures from the federal and state government show only 50 to 70 percent of military personnel are using the GI education benefits they paid for.
