Border Patrol Union Leaders Vote "No Confidence" in Chief Aguilar

The leader of the National Border Patrol Union says his group has lost confidence in U.S. Border Patrol Chief David Aguilar. And they say the Chief should resign. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has the story.

Border Patrol Union President T.J. Bonner says more than 100 union leaders cast a unanimous vote of “no confidence” in Border Patrol Chief David Aguilar. Bonner says they’re dissatisfied for many reasons.

Bonner : The failure to back up men and women who are out there doing their jobs and leadership of the Border Patrol coming out and declaring that the borders are secure when it is obvious they’re not.

Border Patrol officials say the number of illegal crossings has dipped during the last many months due to beefed up border security.

Bonner says the dip simply means border patrol agents are catching fewer people. He says Border Patrol leaders are using the numbers to push President Bush’s political agenda that includes immigration reform.

Bonner says top border patrol leaders should be politically neutral.

The Border Patrol Union represents about 11,000 border patrol agents nationwide.
