Copper thieves are preying on local schools, and they are hitting East County schools hard. The spree is part of the widespread and rapidly growing crime of metal theft due to soaring prices of metals.
Authorities believe the thieves are often drug addicts selling the hard-to-trace material to scrap yards for quick cash. The damage can be extensive and expensive to repair. We'll find out how hard the schools have been hit and how they are responding to the thefts.
