A State Assembly committee has narrowly approved a measure that would require warning labels on flavored alcoholic drinks known as “alcopops”. Supporters of the bill say underage drinkers are big consumers of these beverages. KPBS reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
Alcopops like Mike’s Hard Lemonade are Smirnoff Ice are packaged to look like soft drinks.
The Assembly bill would require these products to carry labels with the phrase “Attention: Contains Alcohol”. The labels would have to be visible from five feet away.

Walsh-Jackson : Many times parents can’t tell the difference between a Capri Sun and a pocket shot. We need some clear labeling on these products that they contain alcohol.
The alcohol industry opposes the bill, saying the beverages are not intended for underage drinkers.
A study by the American Medical Association reveals teenage girls drink alcopops more than any other alcoholic beverage.
