S.D. School Superintendent to Begin New Job at SDSU

San Diego School Superintendent Carl Cohn has a new job at San Diego State University. He leaves the San Diego Unified School District at the end of this month. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

Cohn will be a part-time lecturer and consultant at San Diego State's College of Education. It's a big win for the college. Officials say they were looking for a veteran education leader like Cohn to help manage the college's National Center for Urban School Transformation in City Heights. Cohn will also manage the college's new doctorate program in education leadership. He begins in mid-January.

In the meantime, the San Diego Unified school district board members are moving to find Cohn's replacement. They're conducting interviews this week. Fifty candidates made the cut.

Cohn surprised the local school community a few months ago when he announced he was stepping down as San Diego's Superintendent a year-and-a-half before his contract officially runs out. Cohn said he didn't have the energy or enthusiasm to manage the state's second largest school district.
