Annual Fitness Report: San Diego School Children Out of Shape

San Diego County public school children are still out of shape. That's according to the annual Physical Fitness Report released by state education officials today. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

Close to 70 percent of county students on average did not meet the state's six fitness targets. Those targets include cardio endurance, upper body strength and body fat.

The state's Carry Strong-Thompson says too many school districts aren't preparing kids for a healthy lifestyle.

Strong-Thompson : Some districts may use more of the school year to prepare their students to know that ‘hey, you're going to be taking this test, here's what's you're going to be doing’ -- whereas other districts may take this as ‘this is a standardized test we're doing it today, here's how it goes.’

Strong-Thompson says the results don't mean all of these kids are obese. In fact, the majority of county students did satisfy the cardio endurance target. That's important because healthy hearts lead to fewer health problems.
