The surfers I met call them "pier scrapers" -- waves so high they reach the top of the pier. A bulldozer is building a sand wall to protect the shoreline.

Luke Fadem and Kelly O'Donnell were out of the water by 6:30 this morning. They both say they rarely see surf this big in San Diego.

Fadem: I've been here three days in a row, just watching, and haven't seen anyone out yet at all. I think there's better spots up and down the coast, 'cause here it's not very good. They're just not rideable, because they're sort of crashing down. There's no open face.

O’Donnell: There's not very good shape here. A lot of the guys out yesterday are at places like Black's Beach. But here it just gets too big and you can't really handle the size.

Most beachgoers carried video cameras instead of surfboards.
