S.D. School Board to Discuss Parental Notification and 8th Grade Promotion

San Diego school board members are expected to tackle two hot button issues about the role of parents in their children's lives. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

The first issue deals with a parents right to know if their child is pregnant or leaves campus to get an abortion. Right now parents have to be notified. The district policy has been on the books for 20 years. A number of concerned parents and a local assemblyman are expected to speak against the change.

The second issue deals with whether the district should eliminate its social promotion plan for eighth graders. They want to close a loophole that allows failing students to move on to the ninth grade if their parents ask for a wavier. A recent report shows many kids moved forward even though they failed more than one class. Trustees will vote on whether to force schools to review each case before allowing a academically struggling student to start their freshman year.
