Ike Turner Dies at His San Marcos Home

Ike Turner, whose role as one of rock's critical architects was overshadowed by his image as the man who brutally abused former wife Tina Turner, died Wednesday morning at his San Diego County home. KPBS reporter Ed Joyce has more.

Turner's management company says he died at his home in San Marcos and was 76 years old. There's no immediate word on the cause of death.

Ike Turner had a roller coaster life fighting drug addiction, time in prison and his relationship with Tina Turner. He was married four times. The Ike and Tina Turner Revue was one of the hottest of all R&B ensembles. Fronted by Tina, the band had several hits in the 1960s and early 70s including Proud Mary.

Ike Turner was born on November 5, 1931 in Clarksdale, Mississippi and started his musical career when he was eleven. In 1959 he met Anna Mae Bullock; she later changed her name to Tina Turner.

Ike Turner's abuse of his wife was chronicled in the film What's Love Got To Do With It, based on Tina's autobiography. Ike Turner wrote a book about his life called Taking Back My Name, in which he downplayed the abuse. He continued his musical career and won a Grammy this year in the traditional blues album category for “Risin' With the Blues.”
