San Diego's Visitors Decline in 2007, Outlook Bleak for 2008

A new report finds fewer tourists visited San Diego this year than last year. And the outlook in 2008 doesn't look too rosy either. KPBS Reporter Ana Titocalis has more.

The city's Convention and Visitors Bureau released the report. It shows roughly 31-million tourists came to America's finest city. That's down by about two percent from last year. Energy costs, home prices and credit card debt are to blame. The bureau's Sal Giametta also says a predicted downturn in the national economy could result in fewer visitors next year.

Giametta: There's some uncertainty out there in terms of what the performance will be. But we remain to be cautiously optimistic, we have lots of things going for us. But again we're projecting some very modest growth.

Giametta says even though there were fewer visitors this year, the city raked in more money -- to the tune of $7.8 million. He says that's because the average cost of hotel and motel rooms increased.
