The Messengers

messenger-2.jpg Evan Turner as Ben in The Messengers (Ghost House)    The Messengers (opening February 3 throughout San Diego) is not, as is popular at the moment, a Hollywood remake of an Asian horror film. But it is a Hollywood horror film that imports the Asian filmmaking team of Oxide and Danny Pang. After scoring a handful of hits in Hong Kong, the Pang brothers have crossed the Pacific to try their hand at scaring up an American audience. The Pang brothers drew attention with their first feature, Bangkok Dangerous, a violent Hong Kong actioner with style to burn. They then toned down the violence and turned up the atmosphere for the creepy chiller The Eye and its sequel. The Eye has already caught Hollywoods eye with Tom Cruise's company quickly snapping up the U.S. remake rights. But its Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures that snapped up the talented Pangs for their first English language film.

I thought this movie was very corny and not very scary.

Some points: Why the hell do they let a guy they found wandering a field with a rifle move in with them minutes after meeting him? Why does the chick feel compelled to inquiry every little sound she hears in the house, considering seriously screwed up, traumatic and over-the-top stuff happens almost every time, over and over, yet she always goes into it acting like she has no clue anything's up. Why does the movie go from a decent first to horrible in the final 20 minutes? Why does the "end product", a pseudo-climax, take months and months in the story to take place, when it could have literally 15 minutes into the family's entire situation? Not to give it away, but to anyone who's seen it, they know what I mean. How do you survive TOTALLY UNSCATHED having a pitchfork put through your back for a LONG time and then suddenly end up being in horrible condition? NO REASON to watch this film, and if someone tells you the entire story line beforehand, you would have figured it out on your own as soon as the very first strange thing happens to the family? Ah well, still not as terrible/boring as Cold Creek Manor.

I didn't give away anything that wasn't already given away in the trailer. Horror film trailers these days give away far more than reviews. In fact, if you plan to see 1408, close your eyes and plug your eyes if the trailer comes on. It gives away far too much. Plau, as Dan said, anyone with any familiarity with horror films should have had this film figured out five minutes after the family arrived at the house.

I have been searching for the exact location of the farm used in The Messengers. The closest I have come is near Indian Head Saskatchewan, but exactly where near is, I don't know. Can you help?

OK ... here's what Diane Sather of Tourism Saskatchewan just wrote to me: _________________ After checking with some resources here in Regina, here is what I could find out about the movie, "The Messengers." Any filming of the movie that took place outside of Regina, took place at a location 10 miles northeast of Indian Head on private land. They built a house (which is still standing), moved in a barn and planted 72,000 sunflowers. The cast and crew for the movie stayed either in Regina or at Karepwa Beach. The movie, "Tideland" (2005), was filmed at the same location using a different house. The closest accommodations would be found either in Indian Head or Katepwa Beach. Here are the names and contact information for both communities. Indian Head New Sunshine Motel 306-695-3366 please see our website for information Shayne Inn 306-695-3702 please see our website for information Golf View Bed & Breakfast 306-695-3429/306-695-7047 www.golfviewbandb.com The Corner House 1-866-695-2215 (Canada) please see our website for information Indian Head is just south of the Qu'Appelle Valley; it's quite a unique area in the province. With its rolling hills, numerous lakes, small brush and treed areas and plenty of wildlife, history and recreational opportunities; the valley can fulfill the interests of many people! If you would like any tourism material of the province mailed to you or if you have any further questions; please don't hesitate to contact me. My boyfriend is from Indian Head and his parents own the greenhouse operation that planted all of the sunflowers for the movie. I may be able to find out the location for you?
