More than 200 San Diego State University students who are on academic probation are taking a special class this semester to get back on track. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

SDSU Offers Class to Prevent Students from Failing, Dropping Out

More than 200 San Diego State University students who are on academic probation are taking a special class this semester to get back on track. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more. 

Its called the Bounce Back Retention Program and its designed to prevent students from getting disqualified or dropping out all together. Students can take the class for college credit. They learn principals like resilience and academic skills like time management. Program coordinator Sandy Jorgensen-Funk says about 45 percent of those who take the class are freshman. She says they have a hard time making the transition to college life.

Jorgensen-Funk: Issues going on in their personal lives, in relationships or within their family. Managing their time, managing stress, those kinds of things that can really interfere in them being here in a focused kind of way.

Jorgensen-Funk says students who take the class are less likely to be disqualified than those who choose not to participate. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
