Solana Beach Taking Action to Save Eroding Beaches

North San Diego County beaches are losing sand. A federal study exploring ways to save eroding beaches is long overdue. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce tells us that Solana Beach plans to get tough with the Army Corps of Engineers.

Solana Beach City Manager Dave Ott says the Army Corps of Engineers' study was supposed to be completed four years ago. The corps' study was expected to provide solutions to fix beach and bluff erosion in Solana Beach and Encinitas. The two cities figured they'd be protecting beaches using the study's recommendations. Ott says the wait has been costly.

Ott: We've been studying this for many years now and approximately a lot of monies have been spent about $4.5 million between the cities and the state and the federal government and basically we really don't even have a final study yet.

Ott says thinning beaches mean reduced tourist dollars since there's less space for visitors to play. The Solana Beach City Council has lost patience with delays in the corps' study. They want expert help to push the study forward. Ed Joyce, KPBS News.
