Conference Highlights Link Between Physical Activity and Environmental Design

A three-day conference exploring the link between community design and physical activity is underway in Coronado. It's the fourth annual Active Living Research conference. KPBS reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.

There's a body of research that shows people who live in neighborhoods with sidewalks and easy access to parks are more physically active. Jim Sallis is a professor of psychology at San Diego State. He says when it comes to healthy lifestyles, one's physical environment has to be factored in.

Sallis: And frankly up until recently, we've ignored the impact of living in a place where the closest store is five miles away, or living in a place where the only park you have is in disrepair.

The Active Living Research conference will feature a session on how neighborhood design affects how much young people walk. The conference will also look into the link between health disparities and urban planning. Kenny Goldberg, KPBS News.
