A San Diego County school board member believes a plan to use school funds to pay for regional fire protection won't gain ground in Sacramento. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Sue Hartly represents coastal North County on the San Diego County Board of Education. She calls the plan a "money grab" because it would shift $32 million from county schools to pay for fire protection in rural areas. Hartly says any cutback in school funding will result in bigger class sizes and fewer programs. She thinks the plan won't get legislative support because other counties will jump on the idea.
Hartly: Every single county in the state will look at this and say, we want a piece of that too. And create this situation where the state is going to have to backfill all this money. And I don't think the Governor or the legislature is going to want to do that.
Meanwhile, County Supervisor Dianne Jacob is pushing the plan, which needs legislative approval. She expects the state will replace the money shifted from schools, but county educators worry that won't happen. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
