Secretary of Veterans Affairs Announces New Funding for Homeless Vets

The Veterans Village of San Diego welcomed Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson today. He was in town to announce new funding for homeless vets. KPBS Radio's Andrea Hsu has more.

Secretary Nicholson spoke in the Veterans Village cafeteria. In the audience were local officials and resident veterans - some of whom were homeless as recently as last month. He brought news of $25 million in new funding for transitional housing. That means another 2,500 beds to allow homeless vets to come off the streets.

Nicholson: Our goal is to return to comm like San Diego sober citizens gainfully employed living independently with a higher value of their own preciousness.

He called the San Diego Veterans Village a gold standard for transitional housing. But he added, the work being done is not enough as long as there is still one homeless veteran. He estimated that there are some 750 vets without homes in the San Diego area.

For KPBS, I'm Andrea Hsu.
