It’s all around us, in dozens of locations throughout San Diego, offering moments of serendipity and surprise. Since 1984, a diverse collection of public art--paintings, murals, frescoes, sculptures, monuments, fountains and works of undisputed quality and excellence--have been interwoven into San Diego’s urban landscape and public spaces, celebrating our area’s unique character, diversity and history. From Shelter Island’s “Pearl of the Pacific” by James T. Hubbell, to Niki de Saint Phalle’s “Coming Together” at the San Diego Convention Center, from the colorful “Urban Trees” along the harbor to Malcolm Jones’ “Green Flash” at Belmont Park in Mission Beach, from the outstanding public art collection at the San Diego International Airport to the “Crab Carillon” musical bridge on the 25th Street overpass in Golden Hill, public art animates our lives and creates community identity in our diverse neighborhoods and villages. Through our public arts programs, San Diego is one of hundreds of cities across the nation dedicated to building a unique artistic legacy for future generations.
