Schwarzenegger Wants to Insure All CA Children

Officials in the Schwarzenegger administration say next week the governor will likely announce a plan to insure all children in California, regardless of citizenship. KPBS reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.

Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed a universal healthcare bill for children in 2005. At that time, he said there wasn’t enough money to pay for it.

His new proposal would offer coverage to all of the state’s 750,000 uninsured children. There are no details on how the state would cover the cost. Republican legislators are dead set against offering insurance to undocumented children. But Ed Martinez, director of the San Ysidro Health Center, says it’s not a radical idea.

Martinez: Several states have already done this, and saying that we have an obligation to provide care to all community, regardless of their status in terms of documentation.

The governor is expected to lay out his healthcare proposals next week. Kenny Goldberg, KPBS News.
