Working Mothers Call For National Labor Reform

Tom Fudge: You can’t say that work and mothering don’t mix. But they do come into conflict. And maybe that’s why the earnings of American mothers not only lag behind that of men. They are also a good deal less than the earnings of childless women.

The question of what to do about this situation is open for debate. Some people, frankly, don’t consider it a problem. Bowing out of the work force to raise children, some say, is just one of those things that women do.

But one group involved in this discussion argues that the American workplace needs to change. And it needs to become more friendly to families in general and to working mothers in particular. The group is called Moms Rising.
