Tijuana Municipal Police Force Receives Upgraded Radios

The Mayor of Tijuana gave the city’s municipal police 100 digital radios Thursday.  Police routinely receive death threats on their analog radios. City and law enforcement officials hope the switch to the digital makes police radios more difficult to infiltrate. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.

Last Thursday, Federal authorities ordered all 2,300 municipal agents to turn in their guns. Municipal police officials say since then, they frequently hear transmissions like this one come across their radios.

The sender says, “We’re going to cut your heads off now that you don’t have your guns.”

Municipal police officials say anyone who buys an analog radio can tune to the police frequency. Officials plan to switch the whole force to digital. But they don’t know when that’ll happen.

Meanwhile, Tijuana municipal police officials say federal authorities still have not told them when they plan to return the local force’s guns. In the meantime, the municipal police are limiting their activities and are not transferring prisoners.
