Students at Knox Elementary School in San Diego say they would thank Martin Luther King Jr. for bringing people together. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis visited the school recently.

The students say King would be proud, because kids of every color and nationality get along at Knox Elementary. In fact, it’s hard for them to realize there was once was a time when black and white children went to different schools. They can’t understand why black people had to sit at the back of the bus, shop in different stores, and drink water from different water fountains. Nine year-old Jazmyn Gonzalez says King’s legacy is clear when she looks outside her classroom window.

Jazmyn Gonzalez: Where ever I see outside I see people, like, with freedom. And any different color they have on their skin is fine. They’re just friends.

Kids from other San Diego schools will visit Knox to take part in a King Day parade on Friday. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
