Mexican Officials Continue Crackdown on Drug Trafficking in Tijuana

The attorney general’s office in Mexico sentenced a member of the Arellano Felix drug cartel to prison today. Federal prosecutors in Mexico also say they’re investigating two others for possible ties to the cartel, including a Tecate policeman. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.
Federal prosecutors in Mexico say Luis Cosme Espinoza trafficked drugs and performed kidnappings for the Arellano Felix drug cartel. The cartel is based in Tijuana. U.S. authorities arrested the suspected leader, Francisco Javier Arellano Felix, last August. Mexican prosecutors say Cosme had a stockpile of guns and ammunition. They say the firearms belonged to the Mexican Army, Air Force and Navy.

Meanwhile, prosecutors are also investigating a Baja California state policeman. They suspect he trafficked drugs in Tecate and carried out murders for the cartel. Prosecutors say Rodrigo Escobar was arrested last Thursday.

That same day, authorities detained another man. They say he had more than 1,700 pounds of marijuana packed into his pickup truck. The arrests come as 3000 soldiers crack down on drug trafficking in Tijuana. Amy Isackson, KPBS news.
