Non-Violent Governance Subject of MLK, Jr. Memorial Breakfast

San Diego’s 19 th annual All People’s Breakfast to honor Dr Martin Luther King featured San Diegans who are making a difference locally and across the world.  They spoke of the underlying values of civil rights that promote peace and freedom. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

A couple of thousand San Diegans braved the cold this morning to attend the breakfast. The keynote speakers this year touched often on the themes of war and peace.

Jason Russell is campaigning to save children he saw in northern Uganda who are being forced to fight and die in the ongoing civil war. Russell said the United States has an important role as a superpower.

Jason Russell: When we as a superpower are giving beyond our borders, we are at our best. It is the best counter-terrorism we can put our money into. When we are viewed as a country of good will and of international justice we will be free and we will be safe.

Also speaking this morning was Azim Khamisa, who created a foundation to end youth violence after his son was killed. His spoke of forgiveness, as the basis for his formula for peace. Alison St John, KPBS news.
