Women Firefighters Use Different Tactics

What's it like to be a firefighter if you're a woman? On Wednesday's Full Focus, we'll talk with San Diego Fire Chief Tracy Jarman about the challenges women face as firefighters today.

When the first female fire chief for the city of San Diego was appointed last year, she joined a very small club of about two dozen women who head up fire departments nationwide. Although women have been firefighters for decades, it hasn’t been easy. Twenty five years ago, it took a discrimination lawsuit to force the New York Fire Department to hire a woman. A Los Angeles lawsuit by women firefighters alleges gender discrimination, a hostile work environment including sexual assault and retaliation against complainers. Is it a different environment in San Diego? Host Gloria Penner talks with Fire Chief Tracy Jarman.
