S.D. Offers One-Stop-Shop for Homeless

Agencies working with San Diego’s homeless population hope an event downtown Monday will lure some die-hard homeless off the streets. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

Golden Hall on the San Diego Concourse will turn into a one stop shopping center for services for the homeless today. John Thelan of the Regional Task Force on the Homeless says the idea is to make personal connections with people who are living on the edge.

Thelan: It’s like in sales or business. You always want to make a connection with somebody. It’s the same thing with homelessness. We want to make a connection with people, provide them with some services in one location so they don’t have to go from agency to agency and then slowly get them to the point of making some healthy wise decisions for themselves.

Project Homeless Connect will offer flu shots, information about drug and alcohol services, legal advice and housing resources. The Taskforce estimates more than 4,000 homeless live in the city of San Diego.
