Viagra Sued for Deceptive Advertising

The nation’s largest AIDS treatment organization is suing the maker of Viagra over its marketing practices. The Los Angeles-based AIDS Healthcare Foundation says Pfizer is illegally promoting Viagra as a sexual performance drug. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.

On its website, Viagra is touted as a way for men with erectile dysfunction to improve their sex life.  But the AIDS Healthcare Foundation argues Viagra ads for New Year’s Eve and the Super Bowl encourage recreational use of the drug. Foundation president Michael Weinstein says that’s not all.

Weinstein: Pfizer advertising has encouraged Viagra’s use as part of a sex cocktail, which combines crystal meth, ecstacy, and other drugs with Viagra.”

Weinstein says this cocktail leads to risky sexual behavior. Pfizer says it’s always been committed to the safe and appropriate use of Viagra. The company says it does not promote the drug for recreational use.
