San Diegans Urged to Fight Global Warming

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders says he wants to lower the city's greenhouse gas emissions. A new study says meeting the mayor's goal would require taking half the cars off the road. As KPBS reporter Ed Joyce tells us, a San Diego climate researcher says local residents can fight global warming.

A local researcher applauds the mayor's goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions to 7 percent below 1990 levels. Scripps Institution of Oceanography Professor Richard Somerville says city residents can help reverse global warming. Somerville says San Diegans can personally reduce greenhouse gas emissions by driving smaller and more fuel efficient cars.

Richard Somerville: You can't stop the growth of global warming just by little token actions. You have to think about big changes.

Somerville says we need to park our cars, use public transportation or carpool. He credits California and other states for leading the way in fighting global warming. Somerville is the lead author for a United Nations-sponsored climate change report. The report will be released next week. Ed Joyce, KPBS News.
